These are general installation methods and are not intended to supersede or replace building codes or requirements of any governing body. It is the responsibility of the architect, bulder, and/or owner to be in compliance with all applicable codes for both product suitability and proper installation. For additional procedures refer to ASTM E-2112 or AAMA's Master Installers Program.

IMPORTANT - Before beginning installation, please review the following:

A) Rough opening should be 1/2" larger than total unit size in width and height.

B) Opening should be square, plumb, and level.

C) Exterior wall sheathing should be cut cleanly around the entire opening perimeter.

D) Operating sash/panel must remain in a closed and locked position throughout installation.

E) Frame members must not be allowed to "bow," "crown," or twist during installation, as this may affect unit performance/operation.

  1. If a weather resistant barrier (WRB--ie., house wrap) is used prepare the opening according to manufacturer's recommendations. Cut and fold up the WRP at the top and sides so that the head and jamb nailing flanges of the unit can be installed underneath it. When flashing unit, apply as in the drawings below:

    STEP ONE:
Apply sill flashing so that it extends past the width of the unit a minimum of 12" on both sides.
    STEP TWO:
Apply the vertical flashing so that it overlaps the sill flashing by a minimum of 4". Use sealing tape to seal the vertical flashing to the window frame.
    STEP THREE:
Apply flashing along top of window so that it extends completely over both sides. Use sealing tape to skip-seal the top flashing to the window frame.

  2. Before setting window or door unit, caulk the interior face of the nailing flange inline with the installation holes with an approved high grade exterior sealant.

  3. Center unit in rough opening, making sure it is level, plumb, and square. Place flat shims (approximately 1/4" thick) under window sill frame corners. Do not place shims under window sills except at frame corners. For combination units (twins, triples, etc.), shim under the vertical mull post(s), as well, to help prevent sagging. For horizontal sliders, shim sill at frame corners and at fixed meeting rail(s); care must be taken not to "crown" or "bow" the sill upward with the shims. For patio doors, use shim material as needed under frame sill to maintain a straight and level condition. Shims must fully span the depth of the sill in order to properly support weight on the sill member.

  4. Verify that unit is square, plumb, and true, throughout fastening operation. Install fasteners through the elongated holes provided in the nailing flange, starting at top corners. Continue fastening across the head, crisscross fasten down both jambs, then across sill at approximately 8" intervals. Fasteners should penetrate wood framing at least one inch deep. DO NOT: A) Install fasteners into or near sash balance track as this may impede sash operation. B) Install fasteners at an angle as this may distort frame or may lead to failure of the fastening system.

  5. When fastening is complete, recheck installation to verify that unit is still square and true, and that sash/panel operates smoothly and locks properly.

  6. Caulk over fsstener heads, any unused fastener holes, and at the outside edge of the nailing flange where it comes into contact with the sheathing. Caulk entire exterior perimeter between unit frame and brick or trim. Do not caulk over exterior weep holes or weep covers of unit.

  7. Insulate interior between unit frame and rough opening with fiberglass type insulation; do no pack tightly. Use of spray-in or expanding foam insulation tends to distort frame shape and impede sash/panel operation. Use of this type insulation will void all warranties.

  8. Set-up (assembled) patio doors: The sill/jamb corners of the main frame must be caulked after installation to prevent water infiltration which could result frome shipping and handling damage to original seal. Fixed panel must be moved away from jamb approximately 12" in order to apply caulk. Review patio door assembly sheet for further details.

SPECIAL NOTES

A) The addition of any kind of tinting or film to any surface of the insulated glass will void all glass warranties.

B) For all mulled units: All joints or seams should be completely caulked after installation to eliminate the possibility of water infiltration which could result from "racking" or twisting the unit during shipping, handling, or installation.

C) Units should be stored in an upright position and protected from weather prior to installation.

D) Any penetrations such as alarm sensors made through any portion of window or doorframe will void warranty.

E) Failure to adhere to accepted installation practices such as those above may make void all warranty claims.
